"Skypig" Flying Pig
I have always had a weird fascination with the idea of a flying pig. There is a whimsical and magical aspect of the flying pig I just can't put my finger on. I feel the first two lines of the poem 'High Flight' by John Gillespie Magee Jr, "Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth. And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;" embodies the concept of a pig taking flight and feeling for the first time the ecstatic, true joy of soaring high above the earth, free and uncaring.
Have you ever seen an unhappy flying pig? It seems to me every depiction of a pig in flight is giddy with the knowledge he is doing something he should not be able to do. Therefore, when I started creating Skypig, one of my first thoughts was he had to have that look, that smile where every beat of his wings would take him farther into the unknown all the while expressing his satisfaction for daring to dream and achieving the impossible. The Skypig is not only smiling, but his mouth is agape as if he's laughing out loud with excitement.
Skypig is created using copper, brass, and stainless steel. The wings are colored by heat treating each of the 780 stainless steel feathers to get the rich blue and brown colors. The pig’s coarse hair is 7782 pieces of copper welded on the frame of copper. His ears, nose, belly, and feet are hand formed from copper sheet.
This flying pig sculpture has a 4 ½ foot wingspan and the body is 3 ¾ feet long.
My hope is you see this one-of-a-kind sculpture as a testament to how anything in life can be achieved if you just believe in yourself and dare to dream that impossible dream.
