Julie- Chocolate Lab

“Agape” a word used for thousands of years. For the ancient Greeks it was used to describe the “highest form of love.” Julie was the embodiment of that word. We have had quite a few dogs in our lifetime but none came close to the way Julie loved her humans. When I decided to make the bust of Julie, I told myself if I can’t get the eyes to express that love she displayed I would sideline the project until I figured it out. Thankfully, I’m very happy with the way the copper bust of Julie conveys the look of unconditional love.

This copper art sculpture is a life size bust of a chocolate lab. The frame is of copper and brass which is then covered with over 5200 pieces of copper and stainless-steel creating the fine hairlike appearance of the dog. The colors are derived not by paint but by heat oxidizing the copper to the rich brown you see. The stainless steel was used to show how the old girl was graying over the years on her chin and around her eyes. The metal sculpture was finally clear coated to protect the bust and ensure it looks great for many years to come.
